Just 2 days until Awakenings releases! This is the 2nd book in my "In the Arms of the Law" series.
Though this story deals with the aftermath for Alicia (with what happened to her in book 1, Illusions), there is also another central point of the story that broke my heart.
Roger -- the young boy missing, who spoke to me a lot through the story. He had scenes as well that stood out.
This is a never before seen excerpt.
Hope you enjoy!!

With her old flame back in
her life, and on the trail of a killer, Detective Alicia Knowles is forced to
face the past as she tries to make decisions about her future…
Detective Alicia Knowles once believed there was good in
everyone. Not anymore. After a harrowing experience, her life had changed and
she was a very different woman. Now more dangerous, she moves through the darkness
of her once sunny world, unsure what to do with her pent up feelings of fear
and anger.
Even her new boss, Cole Douglass, makes her feel out of control.
One night, years ago, he made her feel things she'd never felt with any other
man. This time it can only be business between them.
With her latest case, however, temperatures flare.
Their passion is rekindled as the search is on for a missing
child and a murderer on the run. Can Alicia protect her heart from the most
dangerous power of all…love?

Shivers. Shakes.
Fear swept up along Roger’s spine,
causing his body to twitch. He lay on his side and fought sleep. The batteries
had died on one of the flashlights not too long ago. Wanting to save the power
on the second one, he only used it when he had to. He’d begun to hate the dark.
Time didn’t matter anymore. It already felt like he’d been huddled in his
hideaway for months.
Tired, hungry, and needing to use the
bathroom again, he’d sneaked through his apartment a couple times before, only
when he was sure he heard nothing, sure it was safe. After he used the
bathroom, he’d grabbed a couple more water bottles and crackers from the
kitchen as fast as he could. He wished he’d found more, but stored what he
could find.
Scared, more terrified than any other
time in his life, Roger couldn’t stop the nerves that seized his body.
His mother was dead, he was all alone
now, and would be next if his so-called father got his hands on him.
Roger had seen him hurt his mother
over and over again, but he never thought he’d kill her. Even after living through
sleepless nights of his father’s loud voice, and knowing he didn’t really care
about them, Roger had never thought he’d make either of them disappear.
His hands, cupped under his chin,
coiled into fists. The second time he’d left safety and grabbed more water—even
though it was the last thing he needed or he’d have to make more bathroom
trips—he’d noticed a small, white card on the kitchen table.
It
had been too dark for him to see what was on it, but the white of it stood out
and drew his attention. He couldn’t turn on any lights in case he was seen, but
he’d snatched it, only to realize there were two. Clutching them and his water,
he made his way back to his cubbyhole. Once there, he’d immediately grabbed the
still-usable flashlight and read the cards.
